About Our Teacher

Sam Karuna  is an accomplished Malaysian artist with over 37 years of experience in various medium. He is an established Malaysian art personality who has carved a niche for himself in the local and international contemporary batik art world. However, Sam is best known for his passion and dedication to the Batik art form, and this led him to blaze the trail in this field globally by pioneering and originating new home grown form called Dyetik. He is the only artist in the world showcasing contemporary Dyetik art. Dyetik - a unique highly form of batik is a combination between art and science. Unlike the traditional batik art form where the waxed lines are prominent and sections applied are clearly defined. with Dyetik, it is boundless and impossible to tell exactly how and where the wax are being applied or in how many layers. The colours are applied using pointillist technique and it is even further refined with more exquisite dots. The result of that combination gives his painting a lot of depth and emits a surface glow that bestow a mottled and mystical feel. Because of this unique process, each of his painting is time consuming. His paintings are direct expressions of his soul that needs to delve into its depths no matter how long it takes or how painstaking the process could be.

"THE ONLY TIME YOU BECOME AN IMMORTAL IS WHEN YOUR ART WORK IMMORTALIZES YOU"
